It’s an incredible feeling to be part of a clinical trial team that helps bring a drug to FDA approval. As a Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC), you’re working directly with patients who volunteer their time and bodies, hoping to create better futures for themselves and others. The role involves collecting data, dispensing medications, and handling biospecimens. While many drugs never make it to market, the hope that one might succeed drives us forward.
I had the opportunity to be part of the team studying Vadadustat early in my CRC journey. Approved by the FDA earlier this year, vadadustat represents a groundbreaking treatment for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients with anemia. Being part of this research was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career, especially considering how rare it is for a drug to successfully navigate the complex approval process.
The journey to FDA approval is no small feat. It demands immense effort, long hours, and collaboration across teams—from scientists and physicians to data analysts and coordinators like myself. We faced challenges such as patient recruitment, protocol amendments, and maintaining data integrity, but the approval of vadadustat is a testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved.
As a CRC, I saw firsthand the precision and dedication required in clinical trials. From recruitment to monitoring outcomes, my role ensured that every detail adhered to very strict protocols. Witnessing patients respond to the treatment and knowing our work could lead to FDA approval was incredibly fulfilling.
For those aspiring to break into clinical research, it’s a journey worth pursuing. Being at the forefront of medical advancements, we directly impact patients’ lives. The Vadadustat trial showed me that perseverance and teamwork can lead to life-changing breakthroughs. Knowing that my efforts contributed to a better future for patients worldwide is an experience like no other.
